About Combate Beach

Combate Beach is the longest and one of the most beautiful beaches in Puerto Rico.

Its history of Combate Beach dates back to 1512 (according to the historian Don Salvador Brau and Asencio), when the Spaniards begin to settle near the Morillos in Cabo Rojo with the intention of exploiting the salt-rich coves in the area. This resource, as ours as the name of Cabo Rojo, was the main reason for fights and courageous defenses with ax in hand since the first century of colonization. It had to be recovered after the brief British invasion of 1585 at Punta Águila. In addition it defended itself successfully before the Aguadeña Threat of 1769 and against the people from San Germán in that same year, who obtained the same fate.

From there arises the popular name "Mata con Hacha” (Kills with Ax) given to the people from Cabo Rojo, and the adjacent beach acquired the name of "El Combate" (The Combat).

More than 500 years later, Combate beach is known for its tranquility, serene waters and almost untouched flora that surrounds it. It has become a favorite for locals and tourists from around the globe.
